Payment Extension Due to COVID-19
The April 30 deadline for the purchase of vehicle stickers has been extended to May 31, 2020; stickers must be displayed on vehicles by June 1, 2020.
The 2020-2021 Village of Mount Prospect vehicle stickers are currently available for sale. The sticker must be purchased and attached to the lower passenger side of the front windshield by June 1. Standard price Passenger stickers are $45; motorcycle and motorbike tags are $30; and trucks with B plates are $68. There is an additional price schedule for trucks based on individual weight. If you purchased a sticker last year, a renewal application was mailed on January 31st. After May 31, a 50% late penalty is added to the cost of the sticker.
New Village residents have 30 days from the date of residency to purchase a vehicle sticker at the regular rate; otherwise a penalty will apply. After May 31, vehicle stickers for new residents must be purchased at the Finance Department in Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 1st Floor), as proof of residency is required. Failure to display a valid vehicle sticker subjects the resident to a possible citation.
Residents who purchase new vehicles have 30 days from the date of sale to purchase a vehicle sticker at the regular rate; otherwise a penalty will apply. After May 31, vehicle stickers for new vehicles must be purchased at the Finance Department in Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 1st Floor), as proof of purchase date is required. Failure to display a valid vehicle sticker subjects the resident to a possible citation.
If a new license plate is not received within 30 days from the vehicle purchase date, a resident should not wait for the new plate number, but rather indicate that the license has been “applied for." Once the plate number has been received, contact the Finance Department at 847/392-6000 to record the license plate number.
Residents who change vehicles after having purchased a 2020-2021 vehicle sticker should remove the sticker upon the sale/donation/trade-in of the old vehicle and contact the Finance Department at 847/392-6000 with updated vehicle information to determine eligibility for transference of the sticker from one vehicle to another for no additional fee.
Seniors who turn 65 prior to May 1, 2020 are eligible to purchase a vehicle sticker at a reduced rate. However, just one reduced rate per family/household is allowed and the vehicle must be owned and operated by the senior for a non-commercial purpose. Vehicle stickers for first-time seniors may be purchased IN PERSON at the Finance Department of Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 1st Floor), as a current driver’s license is required at the time of purchase.
Certain individuals with disabilities may be eligible to receive one sticker for no charge. If the vehicle has Illinois handicapped license plates, a copy of the registration must be presented annually by April 30 (May 31 this year) to obtain the sticker for no charge. If the vehicle does not have handicapped license plates, a permanent handicapped placard (or photocopy of such) must be presented annually by April 30 (May 31 this year) to obtain the sticker for no charge. Please contact the Finance Department for more information.
FOR ALL OTHER RESIDENTS, THERE ARE A VARIETY OF PAYMENT OPTIONS FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE:
• By Mail
• In Person at Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St.), Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Payment boxes are located outside the front door of Village Hall and in the parking garage, next to the library book return. Please do not deposit cash in the payment boxes.
Key Factors to Keep in Mind
• If you have an expired Mount Prospect vehicle sticker and did not receive a renewal application in the mail, this does not absolve you of the responsibility to purchase a sticker by May 31.
• If the vehicle(s) you have now is/are not the same as the vehicle(s) you had when last year’s sticker was purchased, the application form will contain information about the former vehicle(s). In that case, simply indicate that you no longer own that vehicle and enter the new vehicle information on the application.
If you do not purchase a vehicle sticker by May 31, a 50% late penalty will be added to the cost of your sticker. If you receive a citation for not having an up-to date sticker, you may have to (1) pay a fine; (2) pay the basic cost of the new sticker AND (3) pay the late penalty. You can avoid this by purchasing your sticker(s) on time.
The penalty will NOT initially apply to new Village residents or to residents who purchase replacement vehicles on or after June 1st. In either case, you will have 30 days in which to purchase your sticker without a late penalty. During the grace period, proof of purchase or move-in date will be required to assure that a surcharge penalty is not imposed.
