Street Sweeping
As part of the street cleaning management process, the Public Works Department sweeps all streets in the Village every 2 weeks between Spring and Fall. Street sweeping helps maintain the aesthetics of neighborhoods. It also lessens the effect of debris and vegetation on the storm drainage system and subsequent addition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other contaminants to waterways. Street sweepers travel through the Village on 10 pre-planned routes. All debris is collected and deposited at at the Public Works facility for removal by the Village’s waste hauler.
Pothole Patching
As part of the Village’s pavement maintenance program, crews routinely inspect streets for potholes and patch as needed. Pothole patching prolongs the life of the street by preventing water from penetrating road base. Patching also provides the motoring public with a safe, drivable surface. The goal of pothole patching is to prevent deterioration of road surface by stopping water penetration into road base and to prevent damage to vehicles traveling along roadways. The objective of the program is to inspect and repair as needed, all roads in the Village at least twice annually. This is in addition to potholes identified through the Village’s customer service notification system. Crews drive pre-determined pothole sections, inspecting for surface defects. Potholes are filled with asphalt patching material to bring them as close to street level as possible. Hot mix asphalt is used to fill potholes between the middle of April until middle of December, depending on availability of asphalt. Cold mix asphalt is used at all other times. Crack Sealing
About Crack Sealing
An effective way to help preserve village roads is through the annual crack sealing program. Routing, cleaning, andCrack Sealing pic sealing roadway cracks is an effective pavement preservation practice for streets that exhibit nominal pavement distress. The primary cause of asphalt failure is water infiltration into the street sub grade. The purpose of crack sealing is to prevent the intrusion of water to the base. Stopping water from entering into and under the pavement keeps the base stable and the pavement strong. Crack sealing is one of the most cost-effective preventative maintenance practices for village roads. This year's project will incorporate a new propriety system that captures nearly 90% of all airborne dust particulate thus effectively reducing the mess.
What streets will be sealed?
The Village's crack sealing contractor is scheduled to begin crack sealing next week, April 29. The contractor anticipates completing the work in approximately two weeks. The map of crack filling locations for the current year's program can be found here. The list is comprehensive and the contractor may not complete the list. Work will begin in the northeast section of the village and move to the southwest. This project is heavily influenced by the weather which may impact completion and cause delay.

Sidewalk Maintenance
As part of the Village’s sidewalk maintenance program, sidewalks are replaced as needed when identified through the sidewalk inspection program, through our asset customer service software or otherwise notified via phone or walk-ins. The goal of the program is to replace sidewalk squares determined to present a hazard to ensure public safety. Sidewalk replacements are performed between April and November depending on availability of materials.
