The Village of Mount Prospect is moving forward on an important crosswalk project in our downtown at the intersection of Busse Avenue & Main Street (IL Route 83). Many pedestrians visiting local businesses cross Main Street at this location on a daily basis without the protection of a crosswalk. And with the addition of nearby housing, restaurants, shopping & entertainment, we can expect to see even more pedestrian activity in our downtown in the future. To that end, the Village desires to install a crosswalk across Main Street to enhance safety for pedestrians.
Main Street is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and not the Village. The Village must meet all of IDOT’s requirements In order to receive approval and a permit. IDOT has stipulated they will require construction of a center island for pedestrians to safely cross one direction at a time. Another key element of the project they will require is the elimination of left turns from southbound Main Street onto eastbound Busse Avenue. Motorists normally making this turn will have to use an alternate route such as eastbound Central Road to southbound Emerson Street to Busse Avenue.
The Village has retained the services of an engineering consulting firm to prepare construction plans for IDOT’s review. We will then proceed to construction once IDOT has approved the construction plans and issued a permit. Construction of the project is not expected to begin until later this fall at the earliest. The project will be entirely funded by the Village with no cost participation by nearby businesses.
On March 24, 2020 the Village hosted a live meeting online utilizing the video conferencing app Go To Meeting. To view a recording of the meeting please select the following link.
