July 2019 Update

Construction bids were collected on June 25th, with the Village receiving 5 bids. Upon staff and Altamanu Inc. review, Clauss Brothers Inc. of Elgin, Illinois was recommended to the Village Board on July 16th with a project budget not to exceed $537,153.27. The budget includes one of the alternative options, a pavilion, and a 10% contingency to address any unforeseen issues should they arise.  At this time no water feature is to be installed within the park. It may be phased in at a later date.

The Village Board approved the Clauss Brothers Inc. bid for construction, and construction is scheduled to begin at the end of this month or in early August.

May 2019 Update

Construction drawings for the park are nearing completion. The bid package is to be ready for issuance by the middle of June. Due to the Village Board's discussion at the November 27th, 2018 Committee of the Whole Meeting, the bid package will list two amenities as alternates. This allows the Village to obtain pricing for the following items:

1. A pavilion canopy, proposed in the northeast quadrant of the park.

2. A recirculating fountain, proposed near the corner of Busse Avenue and Emerson Street.

The construction bid process is expected to last the duration of June. Staff will present the park and a recommended construction firm at the July 16th, 2019 Village Board Meeting. The alternate amenities listed above will be presented in an a la carte fashion for Village Board consideration. Construction is to begin by the end of July with completion expected by the end of November.

February 2019 Update

A final park design [image above] was presented to the Village Board on February 5, 2019. The motion to approve the final design and execution of construction drawings and bid issuance passed [4-1].

Amenities of the park include: centrally located paver patio | large programmable green-space | several seating options | lighting | addition of a fountain

The estimated cost to construct the park is $590,000, which includes a 20% contingency. The fountain requires an additional $190,000 but may be phased into the project to ease budgetary constraints.  Learn additional details about the project by reviewing the February 5, 2019 Village Board memo.

November 2018 Update

At the November 27, 2018 Committee of the Whole Meeting, Village Trustees expressed concerns about liability issues surrounding a splash pad. Staff and the consultant will work to achieve a compromise on this issue. View staff memo and related attachments for the November 27, 2018 Committee of the Whole meeting.

October 2018 Update

 Background of Project

The Village of Mount Prospect is in the middle of a public involvement and design process that will culminate in the final design and construction cost estimate for a 0.33-acre park located at the northeast corner of S. Emerson Street and E. Busse Avenue.  The site for the park was identified in both the Mount Prospect Downtown Implementation Plan and Village Comprehensive Plan for public open space in the downtown. The site is two blocks northeast of the Mount Prospect Metra Station. The park is to be named “Edwin and Elsie (Meyn) Busse Park”.

The Village Board of Trustees selected Altamanu Inc. as its primary design and public involvement consultant at its regularly scheduled July 17th, 2018 Board Meeting.  Links to Altamanu's facebook and instagram pages for the park are provided here.
