On Friday, March 15, 2019 at approximately 3:30 P.M., the Mount Prospect Police Department responded to the area of Main Street (Route 83) and Kensington Road for a report of a student with a firearm on a school bus. Officers removed all of the students from the school bus, who were searched for firearms. All bags/backpacks were ordered left on the bus and searched for firearms as well. No firearms were located and further investigation determined this was a hoax.
Officers learned that while the bus was travelling on its route from Prospect High School, the driver overheard a student on the bus claim “he has a gun”. The driver reached out to authorities and pulled the bus over. Officers arrived on scene and determined this was a hoax. Officers transported a 17 year old male to the police station and have charged him with Disorderly Conduct under Mount Prospect Village Ordinance for his thoughtless actions.
The police department would like to commend the bus driver for his fast thinking and quick action to assist in keeping the students safe on the school bus. Parents were notified of the incident through Prospect High School.
