Police Department Promotes Veteran Sergeant to the Rank of Commander

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the Mount Prospect Police Department promoted Sergeant Alison Teevan to the rank of Commander during a ceremony at the Mount Prospect Village Board meeting.

Commander Teevan is an 18-year veteran of the Mount Prospect Police Department who began her career as a patrol officer in 2007. Teevan was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in September of 2021. Throughout her career, Teevan has been a patrol officer, investigator with the Special Investigations Unit, detective, youth officer, task force officer assigned to the FBI, task force officer assigned to the DEA, patrol sergeant and detective sergeant. Commander Teevan has also served in many roles as a member of the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), including serving as the director of MCAT for the past three years. Commander Teevan has received 15 commendations, 8 honorable mentions, 2 certificates of exceptional performance, and 79 letters of appreciation over her career. Commander Teevan has been recognized as an Officer of the Quarter five times in her career. She was also runner-up Officer of the Year in 2009, 2010, and 2016. Commander Teevan was selected as the department’s Officer of the Year recipient in 2013 and 2015. She also received the Cook County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Award of Merit in 2013 and the Cook County Crime Stoppers Excellence in Law Enforcement Award in 2024. Commander Teevan also oversees the Mount Prospect Police Department’s Women in Leadership program, which empowers the department’s female team members by helping them develop leadership skills, foster professional growth, and creating a supportive network for team members.

Mount Prospect Police Chief Michael Eterno had this to say regarding Commander Teevan, “Throughout her career, Alison has exhibited strong leadership skills, professionalism, attention to detail, strategic vision, and the willingness to go above and beyond. Between Alison’s wealth of knowledge and experience I believe she will be a fantastic addition to the department’s command staff.”

With this promotion, Commander Teevan has become the first female commander in the history of the Mount Prospect Police Department, which is a significant milestone that our department is extremely proud of. 

Commander Teevan assumed the role of Patrol Commander of the dayshift patrol, which became vacant after Commander Edward Szmergalski retired after 33 years of service to Mount Prospect on January 2, 2026.
