Fire hydrants throughout the Village-owned water distribution system will be
flushed Tuesday, April 19 till the morning of Friday, April 23. This annual task
is necessary to ensure that every fire hydrant works properly and to clear the
water distribution system of unwanted debris and sediment to assure that the
quality of the Village’s water is as good as it can be.
After the hydrants in your neighborhood have been flushed, please check your tap
water before using it for cooking, drinking or laundry as some rust or other
stain-producing particles may remain. These stain-producing particles remain
only briefly in the water, giving your water a slightly rusty tinge and though
the rusty-looking water may be upsetting, the water is completely safe to drink.
The rusty tinge should disappear within a few moments if you leave the tap on.
Be careful as these particles may stain your laundry. If your laundry becomes
stained when washed immediately after hydrant flushing, do not add bleach as the
bleach may set the stain permanently into the fabric.
Stain-removing compounds for Village water system customers are available
free-of-charge at the Public Works Facility, 1700 West Central Road. For
information about hydrant flushing in the Illinois American Water Company
system, please call 630-739-8800. For more information about the hydrant
flushing in the Village-owned system, call 847-870-5640. Notice signs will be
placed in neighborhoods as flushing occurs.
