Road and driveway culverts should be inspected at least once a year. Maintenance work should be prioritized and scheduled throughout the spring, summer and fall. Malfunctioning culverts contribute significantly to flood damage of roads and bridges.

Routine Seasonal Maintenance

Fall
- Make culvert ends for winter
- Remove obvious blockages

Spring
- Inspect culverts
- Remove obvious blockage (trash, fallen brush)

Summer
- Clean/flush inside pipe
- Repair/improve/install headwalls, end section and splash pads
- Mow, trim and remove brush from around culvert ends
- Cut and remove leaning and falling trees upstream
- Reestablish growth around culvert ends to prevent erosion
- Add cover material
- Remove obvious blockages
