PACK THE HOT DOGS, NOT FIREWOOD --
KEEP EAB OUT OF MOUNT PROSPECT

Emerald Ash Borer
March 2008 Insecticide Considerations

The dreaded Emerald Ash Borer has not yet been found in Mount Prospect. The Forestry/Grounds Division wishes to remind residents that it is extremely important not to move firewood for fear of spreading this pest!

For those who love to camp or have vacation homes in other states, it is critical to purchase local firewood at your destination. When your stay is over, burn any leftover wood or leave it at your site.

Additionally, when buying firewood in Illinois, ask for the source. If the wood has come into Illinois from other states that are under federal EAB quarantines, it should carry a USDA shield like the one shown below. (As of May 2007 this included Indiana, Ohio and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan).

Finally, please don’t move any deciduous firewood out of Illinois. Doing so could spread the EAB beetle and subject you to substantial federal fines.

Have a wonderful and safe summer. And remember, when traveling and preparing to return home to Illinois, pack up any extra hot dogs but leave the firewood behind. Let’s keep Mount Prospect free of EAB!
