The Village of Mount Prospect has an ordinance that limits the weight of a
vehicle on all Village-owned streets to 6 tons (12,000 pounds) except for a few
designated truck routes. While personal vehicles including SUV’s weigh less than
6 tons, small sized delivery trucks and larger are affected by this ordinance.
The goal of the ordinance is two-fold: to protect the integrity of our street
system by extending the life of the pavement and to limit the amount of
unnecessary truck traffic in our neighborhoods.
Realizing that certain overweight vehicles need to travel on Village-owned
streets, the Public Works Department has developed a procedure for issuing
permits to trucking companies. In cases where an overweight vehicle travels on
Village-owned streets on a regular basis, they must do so using the shortest
route possible between designated truck routes. Garbage and refuse trucks, mail
delivery trucks, moving trucks, and school buses are all
obligated to follow this restriction. The vehicles just mentioned are not
required to obtain a permit but are subject to a fine if caught traveling on a
Village street where they have no legitimate business in the neighborhood. All
other overweight vehicles desiring to travel on Village-owned streets must first
obtain a permit. The Public Works Department is available to assist those

Overweight vehicles requiring a permit but where one has not been issued,
overweight vehicles traveling on a street or date not authorized on the permit,
or overweight vehicles carrying a load heavier than indicated on the permit are
subject to a fine. In addition to monitoring Village-owned streets, the Police
Department also patrols and enforces weight limits on streets under the
jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation and Cook County
