It is the policy of the Mount Prospect Police Department that members will
exercise their police powers in a manner that respects the constitutional rights
of all persons and does not unlawfully discriminate against individuals based on
race, color, national origin or ethnicity. Specifically, members of the Mount
Prospect Police Department will not engage in any activities that are indicative
of a practice of racial profiling. To this end, in May 2000 the Mount Prospect
Police Department began a program of collecting and analyzing traffic stop data
to identify possible instances of racial profiling. On July 18, 2003 Governor
Blagojevich signed into law legislation mandating all police agencies in the
State of Illinois to collect traffic stop data to determine possible instances
of racial profiling. This law became effective January 1, 2004. The Mount
Prospect Police Department will continue its commitment to collecting and
analyzing traffic stop data to ensure members of this agency do not engage in
the practice of racial profiling. Additionally, all traffic stop data mandated
by the State of Illinois will be transmitted to the Illinois Department of
Transportation quarterly.
The following statistics where compiled for the period of January 1, 2007
through December 31, 2007. These statistics are broken down into racial groups
as prescribed by the State of Illinois. As indicated, the Mount Prospect Police
Department conducted 15,255 vehicle stops for violations of state or municipal
traffic violation.
