Mentor Program Seeks Volunteers
Village Mentor Program Seeks Volunteers
Each year, teachers and social workers identify at-risk children whom they feel
would benefit from our mentoring program. Volunteers from the community are
paired in a school-based, one-on-one relationship, with the aim of helping a
child toward a more promising future. The program consists of two ten-week
sessions, beginning the third week of September and will meet one night a week
at a local school. Our next Volunteer Orientation is scheduled for August 18,
from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Village Hall. If you have been thinking about becoming
more involved in your community, have no criminal record, and enjoy spending
time with children, please call Thomas Tucker at 870-5680.

The Mount Prospect Mentor program is coordinated by through the Human
Services Department, and is based at Euclid, John Jay and Robert Frost (south)
elementary schools, Holmes Jr. High, and River Trails Middle School.
Volunteers are paired one-on-one with a student for a minimum of 10 weeks, and
meet one evening per week with that child in a group setting. The coordinator
and volunteers pre-plan activities, and everyone has fun while the children
improve their social skills. This program has received rave reviews from
teachers and administrators alike, as well as parents and children.
We asked the kids what they liked about the mentor program:
- "It helps me practice communication skills."
- "We have fun!"
- "You get to meet new people - people that you don't normally talk to or
hang out with at school."
- "It makes you more aware of other people's feelings."
And the mentors had some good things to say as well:
- "You get to understand kids, and keep up on the new fads."
- "It's an easy way to give back to the community."
- "It's a great opportunity, and gives you a good feeling."
