| CARELESS GRILLING CAN COOK-UP TROUBLE |
| |
Every year in the United States, hundreds of fires are started by people
using barbecue grills. Careless grilling can be very costly and dangerous.
The following guidelines are recommended safety tips when using your barbecue
grills:
Charcoal Grills:
1. Always provide adequate ventilation and maintain proper distance from all
combustibles.
2. Make sure the ash catcher is properly attached to the bottom of the grill.
3. Before disposing of ashes and remaining charcoal, make certain that they are
properly extinguished. After grilling, allow coals to cool and douse the coals
thoroughly with water. Accidental fires have occurred even after coals have been
cooled and doused with water when disposed of improperly. Never discard used
coals in a cardboard box or any other combustible container.
Gas Grills:
When using your gas grill for the first time of the season, take time to
thoroughly inspect your grill and read over the instructions for maintenance and
cleaning of internal mechanisms. Many gas grill fires are caused by cracked or
faulty gas lines (even a spider web in the line can cause a blockage).
1. Always provide adequate ventilation and proper distance from combustibles and
buildings.
2. Make sure the gas tank is properly attached to the grill line.
3. Open the hood and wait about thirty seconds before attempting to light the
gas burner.
4. Follow your instructions for lighting the grill. If the burner does not
ignite within five seconds, turn the gas valve off and check the line. The
burner and/or line may be clogged with dirt. (See manufacturer’s instructions
for proper cleaning.)
5. Make sure to check the grease drip pan and discard with each use. Fires have
occurred when there is too much build-up of grease in the drip pan.
These fire safety tips will help ensure you to have a safe and tasty grilling
season.
