Secure the site

  • Secure the site from further damage by weather, theft or vandalism.
     
  • Contact a board up company if the damage is excessive on the property. This should only be done after talking with your insurance company.
     
  • Contact your insurance agent to report a loss.
     
  • Keep all receipts for items that might be purchased after the incident.
     
  • Remove any valuables from the building if you need to leave.
     

Cautions after the incident

  • Watch for signs of heat or smoke – Call 911 if this occurs.
     
  • Check with a licensed electrician before turning on any electrical appliances.
     
  • Plumbing fixtures need to winterized.
     
  • Beverages, medicines and food exposed to heat, smoke or soot should be discarded.
     
  • Freezers or refrigerators left unopened will hold their temperature for a short time.
