The Mount Prospect Fire Department has been very active with all of the schools and daycare facilities through our co-operative educational programs. Currently the fire department has a progressive educational program that continually builds through each grade level. Our program continually changes to address the needs of the school and of our daycare facilities.

The following is an overview of programs offered to each grade.

Kindergarten: Friendly Firefighter – We review the special clothing a firefighter wears in the event of a fire or smoke filled environment and the clothing a paramedic may wear when you need medical attention.

First Grade: Friendly Firefighter – We have a detailed look at special firefighting clothing. We will discuss and practice Stop, Drop and Roll. We talk about items in our homes that might be dangerous to touch.

Second Grade: Students discuss home safety including calling 9-1-1, kitchen safety, fire alarm usage and knowing two ways out of their house using the fire safety trailer. Students practice checking a warm door, finding a second way out of a house and meeting at a “meeting place”.

Third Grade: Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H.) – We discuss and have students prepare a home escape plan with two ways out of their home. We become house detectives by looking at a home and discuss possible causes of fires. Students will be able to practice being a detective at home.

Fourth Grade: The Fire Triangle and how things burn - We discuss simple burns and first-aid for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, degree burns. We discuss kitchen safety tips on how to be safe around the stove and microwave. We discuss different smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and how sprinklers work in homes and businesses.

Fifth Grade: Severe Weather - Using the fire safety trailer students experience a “simulated” tornado and review safety steps that should be taken in the event of severe weather.
