In 2005, 43% of the vehicle fatalities in Illinois were alcohol related*. The fire and police departments in conjunction with Prospect High School have an annual Operation Prom Night awareness program to educate junior and senior high school student on the affects of drinking and driving and making the right choices.
This program is a two part program that includes one year of an accident re-creation and a second year of a motivational guest speaker.

During the accident recreation high school students from the school’s KUNI – Knights Under No Influence, program are asked to be “victims” of a drunk driving accident. Student “victims” act in the roll of passengers in the vehicle and have theater make up added to visually display the results of an accident. Police and fire units are requested to administer a sobriety test and to extricate the victims from the vehicles. Some of the victims are also “killed” during the incident and the local funeral home comes to remove the “victim." This somber event puts the reality into the students decision about alcohol drinking.

  • On the opposite year from the accident re-creation a special guest speaker selected by Prospect High School KUNI members to talk with students about making right choices in life regarding alcohol and drug usage. These motivational speakers make a very large impact on the student body from the High School.

  • Guest speakers included victims of drunk drivers, surviving victim relatives from a drunk driver, and a driver who was intoxicated and caused an accident.

  • These motivational speakers bring a personal reality to the students to help them better understand that wrong decisions effect many other people other than just themselves.
