In 2001, the Census Bureau has released demographic
profiles for all states, counties and municipalities. The profile provides basic
information for population totals by sex, age, race, and households based on the
2000 Census results.
While there were few dramatic changes for Mount Prospect and much of
Northeastern Illinois between 1990-2000, there are some interesting numbers. While the Census
results are used to redistrict congressional and state legislative
districts, they are also an important tool for federal, state, county and
local agencies to deliver services. In addition, changes in demographics can
increase or decrease the amount of federal funds for which the Village is
eligible.
The following is a summary of the profiles provided to the Village by the Bureau
of the Census and a summary provided by the Northeastern Illinois Planning
Commission. The profiles for all municipalities, counties and states are
available on line at www.census.gov.
Overall Growth
Overall, the Village has increased in population by 3,095 from 53,170 in 1990 to
56,265 in 2000. Neighboring towns saw similar increases: Des Plaines increased by 5,497
people to a total of nearly 59,000; Prospect Heights increased 1,842 people to a
total of 17,081. Elk Grove Village increased to 34,727, an addition of 1,298
people; Arlington Heights had the smallest increase in the area - adding 571,
bringing their total population to just over 76,000.
Regional Growth
Regionally, Cook County increased by 271,674 (5.32%) to 5,376,741 and all of
Northeastern Illinois, including Cook and the collar counties, increased 830,544
(11.4%) to 8,091,720. The state saw an increase of nearly 1 million people
(8.6%), resulting in a total population of 12.5 million.
Latino Population
One of the biggest stories from the census is the significant growth of the
nation’s Latino population. The growth of the Hispanic population in Illinois
reflects national trends. According to the Census Bureau statistics, the state’s
Hispanic population stands at 1,530,262, a 69.2 % increase over the 904,449
Hispanics counted in 1990. Mount Prospect’s Latino population nearly doubled to
over 6,000 residents, representing 12% of the total population. Our surrounding
neighbors saw similar increases.
Median Age
And of course, we are all getting a little older. Although as the following
charts reflect, Mount Prospect does not appear to be aging as quickly. While the
median age for the village is not the lowest, the change from 1990 is about half
that of Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Village. In addition, the second chart shows
the greatest gains and losses in population by age range.
