  • Permit Requirements
Specific permit requirements vary from project to project, but the Building Permit Information page provides an overview of and links to information for each type of permit. The Contractor License Information section outlines the Village’s requirements regarding licensing.

  • Inspections
Inspections are an important part of any construction project. Inspections ensure the work is done correctly and complies with code regulations. While the property owner and contractor may have arrived at a different arrangement, usually the contractor schedules an inspection. However, both parties are held responsible if an inspection is ‘missed’. Therefore, it’s in everyone’s best interest if the property owner and contractor resolve who is responsible for scheduling inspections before the project is started. The Required Inspections section provides a list of which projects require inspections and at what point during the project. Inspections are scheduled through the Building Division (847/870-5675) and at least 24-hours notice is required. During peak construction times, 48-hours notice may be required.

NOTICE: The Building Division is extremely busy and we are currently booking inspection times 48 hours out. Please plan for your inspections accordingly and call to schedule at least 48 hours in advance.

Due to increased inspection requests, our inspectors are out in the field most of the day. If you have technical (code) questions, you will get a more timely response by emailing your questions to .

  • Lead in Remodeling/Renovation:
See new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Construction and Renovation Firm Rules that take effect April 22, 2010. Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.

Beginning in December 2008, the rule will require that contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint provide to owners and occupants of child care facilities and to parents and guardians of children under age six that attend child care facilities built prior to 1978 the lead hazard information pamphlet.
