The 2016-2017 Village of Mount Prospect vehicle stickers are currently available for sale. The sticker must be purchased and attached to the lower passenger side of the front windshield. Passenger stickers are $45; motorcycle and motorbike tags are $30; and trucks with B plates are $68. There is an additional price schedule for trucks based on individual weight. If you purchased a sticker last year, a renewal application was mailed the first week of February. If you did not receive an application, please obtain one at the Finance Department in Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 1st Floor).

NEW Residents/NEW Vehicles
New Village residents or residents who have purchased an additional vehicle have 30 days from the date of residency or purchase date to purchase a vehicle sticker at the regular rate; otherwise a penalty will apply. Vehicle stickers for new residents may be purchased IN PERSON at the Finance Department in Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 1st Floor), ONLY, as proof of residency or bill of sale is required.

If a new license plate is not available within the 30-day time-frame, a resident should NOT WAIT FOR THE NEW PLATE NUMBER, but rather indicate that the license has been “applied for." Once the resident has received the plate number, the resident MUST CALL 847/392-6000 to advise the Finance Department of the license plate number. Failure to display a valid vehicle sticker subjects the resident to a possible citation.

Key Factors to Keep in Mind
• If you had a 2015-2016 vehicle sticker and did not receive a renewal application in the mail, this does not absolve you of the responsibility to purchase a sticker by the due date.
• If the vehicle(s) you have now is/are not the same as the vehicle(s) you had when last year’s sticker was purchased, the application form will contain information about the former vehicle(s). In that case, simply indicate that you no longer own that vehicle and enter the new vehicle information on the application.

Senior Rates
• Reduced rates are available for residents 65 years of age and older (with proof of age and a current driver’s license). However, just one reduced rate per household is allowed and the vehicle must be owned and operated by the senior for a non-commercial purpose. Seniors who turn 65 prior to May 1, 2016 are eligible for the reduced rate and must come into Village Hall to obtain the sticker with a current driver’s license.

Handicapped Rates
• Certain individuals with disabilities may be eligible to receive a sticker at no charge. If the vehicle does not have handicapped license plates, a permanent handicapped placard must be presented annually to obtain the sticker at no charge. Please contact the Finance Department for more information.

Late Penalties
If you do not purchase a vehicle sticker by May 1, escalating late penalties will be added to the cost of your sticker. If you receive a Police Department citation for not having an up-to date sticker, you may have to (1) pay a fine; (2) pay the basic cost of the new sticker AND (3) pay the late penalty. You can avoid this by purchasing your sticker(s) on time.

The penalty will NOT initially apply to new Village residents or to residents who purchase replacement vehicles on or after May 1. In either case, you will have 30 days in which to purchase your sticker without a late penalty. During the grace period, proof of purchase or move-in date will be required to assure that a surcharge penalty is not imposed.

If you change vehicles during the year after having purchased a 2016-2017 sticker, the sticker may not be moved to another vehicle. A transfer sticker may be obtained within 30 days of purchase (with original receipt) in order to qualify for the $5 transfer fee. If you are awaiting new license plates, you should purchase the sticker within the 30-day period and indicate “applied for” in the space on the application for license plate information. When you receive the plates, please contact the Finance Department and provide the plate number.

For more information regarding vehicle stickers, please call the Finance Department at 847/392-6000.
