Smoke Alarm Grant Assists in Installation of 50 Sets of Smoke Alarms

Post Date:01/15/2018 12:47 PM
smokealarm300In 2017, the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) awarded the Mount Prospect Fire Department with 50 Ionization smoke alarms.  Recognizing that the best protection comes from having a combination of Photoelectric and Ionization smoke alarms, Mount Prospect Firefighters Local 4119 stepped up to match the award by providing 50 Photoelectric smoke alarms. In addition to providing the Photoelectric smoke alarms, union members (who are all Mount Prospect Firefighters) donated their time to perform the installations off-duty, installing 50 sets of alarms in 50 homes throughout the month of December.

The smoke alarms were available to residents that had smoke alarms that were more than 10 years old, or currently had no smoke alarms.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, from 2009-2013, three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  Residents are urged to regularly check their smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly.  Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.

The Fire Prevention Bureau can assist residents with the installation of smoke alarms. For more information about smoke alarms and other fire safety topics, please contact the Mount Prospect Fire Protection bureau at 847/818-5253, or visit the Fire Prevention Bureau Pages.
