Fire Destroys Restaurant, Offices and Apartments
At approximately 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2014, Mount Prospect firefighters were called for a report of smoke in the building at 105 S. Main Street, in Mount Prospect. The building is home of Sakura Restaurant. Adjoining occupancies include the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce, Central Continental Bakery, and Picket Fence Realty with residential apartments above these tenants.
Upon arrival, Mount Prospect firefighters were confronted with smoke in multiple occupancies in the building with Mount Prospect Police Officers evacuating residents at this address; no fire was visible from the outside. Upon investigation, firefighters found fire through the first floor in Sakura Restaurant.
The fire was escalated to the Box Alarm level, where Mount Prospect was assisted by Des Plaines, Arlington Heights, Prospect Heights, Elk Grove Township, Wheeling, Rolling Meadows, Glenview, Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Palatine Rural, North Maine, Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates Fire Departments.
The fire loss was stopped at 8:46 a.m. No one was injured.
As of February 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., the cause of this fire is still under investigation. Both traffic lanes heading northbound on Route 83 are being rerouted until the building is deemed structurally sound. Public safety is the number one priority.
